BREDA - A court in Breda has sentenced a 42-year-old American man to 15 years in jail for the murder of a student with an axe. The sentence is to be followed by enforced psychiatric care.

The murder took place in Roosendaal railway station, where a 22-year-old student from Bergen op Zoom was sitting eating in a waiting room.

The American, a dedicated communist, had said he wanted to commit an act of anti-imperialism.

He first intended to kill a soldier from the military barracks in Roosendaal but when he failed to realise that objective, he decided to select a victim at random.
