Football clubs Roda JC and Fortuna Sittard announced a merger.

LIMBURG—The merger between football clubs Roda JC and Fortuna Sittard is now more or less a fact. A merger proposal has been accepted by the boards of both clubs. If everything works out, they should be able to start playing next season as a single Premier League club. Roda is currently in 16th place in the Premier League, while Fortuna is in the First Division in 15th place. Two foundations linked to the two clubs still have to agree to the move.

A steering committee recommended the merger on the grounds that neither Limburg team could survive independently. Roda JC itself is historically the result of a complex series of past club mergers. There were emotional protests from the supporters when the plans were made public a few months ago. It's not known what name the new club will adopt.
