Vitesse have notched up a lucky 1-0 away victory over a stronger Heracles Almelo thanks to captain Guram Kashia, who scored with a powerful header from a corner in the match’s final phase. Referee Ed Janssen caused considerable commotion among the home crowd when he refused to grant Heracles a penalty.

Further down the table, NEC Nijmegen, who played with one man less for most of the second half, were also fortunate enough to beat VVV-Venlo 2-0. Both goals were scored by John Goossens, who converted free kicks on 25 and 78 minutes. NEC’s Bram Nuytinck was sent off the pitch on 53 minutes for downing Yanic Wildschuit after he had broken free. VVV-Venlo have yet to end their sixteen-match losing streak.

Roda JC Kerkrade thumped bottom-of-the-league Excelsior 7-0. The goals were netted by Jagos Vukovic, Davy de Beule, Ruud Vormer, Arnaud Djoum Sutchuin twice, Mitchell Donald and Mikolaj Lebedynski.

FC Groningen secured a narrow 1-0 home win over FC Utrecht thanks to David Texeira, who scored on 60 minutes, taking his season’s tally to seven. With 26 points out of 17 matches, Groningen are now in eighth position. Utrecht, with 17 points, are in 14th spot.
