A collision between a speed boat and a cargo barge carrying cement killed four people and lightly injured three others on the Netherland's Meuse river, police said Tuesday.

"Four people went missing after the collision and we found the bodies of these four people following searches carried out (Monday) night and (Tuesday) morning," police spokesman in the north-Brabant district, Kim Dekkers, told AFP.

The cause of the accident is not yet clear, Dekkers said, specifying the collision occurred at 9 pm (1900 GMT) in Cuijt, an eastern town close to the German border.

"We know that alcohol had been consumed on the speedboat but we don't know if the person at the wheel of the boat had been drinking before the collision," the spokesman added.

The four dead were between the ages of 24 and 32, according to police.
