Rise in murder tips for Dutch crime hotline
M. – the Dutch hotline for anonymous crime tips – received between four and five useful tips a week regarding murder or manslaughter in the first six months of 2011. According to its own figures, the hotline received 118 tips in relation to killings, 20 more than in the same period last year.
The hotline also reached a milestone in its history in the first six months of 2011, as the number of tips passed the 100,000 mark. It also reports that one anonymous tip received in May helped prevent a drug-related killing.
M. received a total of 6330 serious tips over the past six months, approximately the same amount as the same period last year. Over half of the calls reported crimes connected with drug dealing.
The hotline reports that tips on illegal possession of weapons were down 21 percent on last year. Anonymous calls have led to the seizure of 770 firearms since the hotline was founded in 2002.
