Research shows gas-run cars not so clean after all
A study carried out by Dutch research institute TNO has revealed that cars running on natural gas emit just as much carbon dioxide and almost as much fine particulate matter as a modern diesel car.
AMSTERDAM -- The institute in Delft compared cars running on diesel, natural gas and petrol for the television programme Nieuwslicht.
The Dutch government encourages driving on natural gas with subsidies and lower car tax, on the assumption that this is cleaner than using diesel or petrol. According to TNO, the use of improved diesel and petrol will eventually produce results similar to those currently achieved with natural gas-run motor cars.
