THE HAGUE – The fighting in Uruzgan shows that the international community must remain active in Afghanistan.
Foreign minister Maxime Verhagen has said this in reaction to the death of Sergeant Major Leunissen on Monday, the third combat-related death among the Dutch troops in Afghanistan.
The minister said that "there is an enemy that wants to return to the time when Al Qaeda dominated and the Taliban was in power in Afghanistan. And that is an immediate threat to our security."
Leunissen died in an accident during fighting in the Chora pass, north of the Dutch base in Tarin Kowt. There has been fierce fighting in the area over the past several days.
