Red panda escapes from Artis zoo

A red panda escaped from Amsterdam's Artis Zoo on Tuesday evening. A spokesperson for the zoo says, the animal, which bears no resemblance to the better-known black and white Chinese pandas, was found within an hour in a tree near the zoo.

It is thought that the animal may have escaped by swinging from tree to tree. Fireman spread a sheet under the tree and a vet sedated the animal before capturing it to return it to the zoo.

Red pandas are small, they have browny-red fur and a long bushy striped tail. In the wild, the vulnerable species can be found in the foothills of the Himalaya.
