Red alert as fire threatens Dutch countryside

The emergency services have once again issued a “code red” fire alert in parts of the Netherlands.

A red alert has been issued for the Veluwe nature reserve in the province of Gelderland and for part of Noord-Brabant. An amber alert – the second-highest category – has been issued for other parts of the central and east of the Netherlands.

Much of the Netherlands was subject to code red last week but showers at the weekend reduced the immediate danger of a blaze in some areas. But as the dry, sunny weather continues, accompanied by strong winds, the threat of wildfires is once again on the rise.

The fire service has stepped up its surveillance of the nature reserves and is keeping additional personnel and equipment ready for action.
