A work by Dutch painter Frans Francken II (1581-1642) fetched a record 7.02 million euros (9.4 million dollars) at an auction in Vienna this week, the Dorotheum auction house said Friday.

Francken's huge painting entitled "Man Having to Choose Between the Virtues and Vices" was bought for 7,022,300 euros, the highest price ever paid for the artist's work, the Dorotheum said in a statement.

It was also way above experts' estimates that the painting would go for between 400,000-500,000 euros.

Francken II was part of a dynasty of Flemish painters, including Hieronymus Francken I, Hieronymus Francken II, Ambrosius Francken, Frans Francken I and Frans Francken III.

He eventually moved to Rome where he specialised in mythological paintings.
