VOORBURG - Last year saw a record number of tourists from North and South America visit the Netherlands. More than 1.3 million visitors from the two continents stayed the night in hotels and other accommodation in the Netherlands. This emerged from figures published by Statistics Netherlands (CBS) on Wednesday.

The total number of overnight stays by Americans also increased 10 percent. Last year Americans accounted for 2.4 million overnight stays in Dutch accommodation, up from 2.1 million the year previous. This increase was due to a rise in the number of overnight stays in both budget hotels and four and five star accommodation.

The most popular destination for Americans is the province of Noord-Holland. More than 75 percent stayed overnight in this province, most of them in Amsterdam. Rotterdam, Utrecht, The Hague and Maastricht are also popular among North and South Americans.

The number of American tourists that visit the Netherlands has been rising every year since an all-time low in 2003. The attacks of 11 September 2001 had caused a dip in the number of Americans travelling abroad.
