TILBURG – The number of homes on the market in the Netherlands last year rose to a record high. At the end of 2007 there were 153,700 homes being offered for sale, an increase of almost 11 percent from the previous year.

This emerged from a survey published on Wednesday by Spacemakers.nl, a website for (project) developers.

The asking price for the homes rose on average by 1 percent. That is less than the 4-percent increase in the average sale price estimated by Spacemakers.

Especially the number of apartments for sale rose dramatically, by almost 20 percent, while the average asking price hardly increased at all. Spacemakers concludes that the Dutch think the prices for apartments are too high. Especially larger apartments of 100 square metres or more stay on the market for a long time.
