THE HAGUE – The Liberal VVD faction in Parliament should reconsider its standpoint on dual nationality. Restricting the dual nationality of some 1 million Dutch is not liberal and goes against the wishes of the VVD members.

Prominent VVD member and mayor of Leeuwarden Geert Dales said this at the VVD conference in Rotterdam this weekend. Dales wants a debate to be held in the party soon about how the VVD should approach the topic of dual nationality.

Dales said that in his view dual nationality is not a problem. "Liberals assess people on their rights and obligations, their conduct, their degree of integration, whether they have learned the language and take part in our society. Having two or more passports is entirely unimportant to that," he said.

Dales will meet with the party chairman to discuss when a debate can be held.
