AMSTERDAM — Arsenal striker Robin van Persie is no longer a suspect in a rape case in the Netherlands.
The Dutch public prosecutor's office said on Tuesday the case had been dismissed due to a lack of evidence against Van Persie.
The 22-year-old footballer from Rotterdam admitted he had sexual contact with the woman, 25, in June 2005. He denied her allegation he had raped her. Investigators concluded she was not compelled to do anything against her will.
The woman, who is also from Rotterdam, has been informed of the findings. It is open to her to appeal against the decision to dismiss the case.
Van Persie made his debut for Holland in the World Cup qualifier against Finland in 2005 and scored his first international goal in the match against Romania.
He joined Arsenal in the UK from Feyenoord Rotterdam in the summer of 2004.
