AMSTERDAM – The Ramadan Festival had its official start on Thursday evening. Non-Muslims too are welcome at the festival, which celebrates the Islamic month of fasting. Minister for Integration Ella Vogellar expressed her appreciation for this in a speech on Thursday.

"This festival gives non-Muslims a chance to get to know Islam better. And that is what is needed in the Netherlands," Vogelaar said.

Millions of Muslims worldwide will abstain from food and drink during Ramadan. Food is only permitted after sundown. An estimated 80 to 90 percent of the Muslims in the Netherlands are expected to observe the month of fasting.
