AMSTERDAM — Orange-clad fans and journalists gathered in The Hague on Tuesday morning to await the arrival of Queen Beatrix for Budget Day.
There was also a large presence of police as fences were erected in the city centre to ensure security and order as the Queen started the journey in the traditional golden coach from Noordeinde Palace to Parliament buildings in The Hague.
Queen Beatrix is due to give her annual Prinsjesdag address in front of the country's top politicians in the Knights' Hall, or Ridderzaal, at 1.30 pm. The speech will outline her government's legislative plans for 2006.
Finance Minister Gerrit Zalm will formally present his budget for 2006 from 3.30pm.
His speech is not expected to contain many surprises as a draft copy of his budget plans was leaked to the media last week.
