AMSTERDAM – Queen Beatrix will attend the celebration to mark the 50th anniversary of the founding of the EU on 22 March in Rome.

Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende will also speak at the festivities held at the government buildings in The Hague to mark the event.

The foundations for the European Union were laid fifty years ago with the treaties of Rome. Government leaders signed the treaties providing for the founding of the European Economic Community (EEC) and European Atomic Energy Community (Euratom) on 25 March 1957.

Other European cities will also be hosting birthday celebrations.
