THE HAGUE – The fact that the queen has state visits planned until 2010 does not necessarily mean that she will remain on the throne until that time. The state visits are planned for the head of state, regardless of whether it is the queen or her successor. The visits planned are moreover still tentative.

A spokesperson for the government information service said this on Wednesday. On Tuesday evening the television programme NOVA read from memos that had leaked from the queen's office and which contained information about upcoming state visits. The programme's producers had found the papers in a garbage container.

NOVA has returned the documents to the government information service, which has now taken measures to ensure that these kinds of confidential documents are not leaked again.

The Liberal VVD plans to ask Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende for clarification on Wednesday. The prime minister said on Tuesday night that "this should not have happened."
