Queen Beatrix attends opening of Maritime Museum
Queen Beatrix attended the 'grand opening' of the Netherlands Maritime Museum in Amsterdam on Saturday evening. She arrived at the waterside museum on her private yacht De Groene Draeck. Incidentally, the queen almost lost her shoe on the gangplank. Other guests also arrived by boat.
The Queen was welcomed with a bunch of flowers from the musuem’s child managing director, 11-year-old Lisa van Dam. Around 700 guests have been invited to attend the opening. Mayor Eberhard van der Laan was to have held a speech, but was unable to attend due to the squatters’ demonstration elsewhere in the city. The refurbished museum's two exhibitions will be on show to the public from Sunday.
The museum has been closed for four years during which time it has undergone a thorough renovation. The inner courtyard, Het Open Pleyn, has been given a spectacular glass roof.
