HILVERSUM –Active Labour PvdA members want Jan Pronk to be the new party chairman. This emerged on Thursday from a poll conducted by Radio 1 programme De Ochtenden among 300 PvdA members serving on municipal councils and in other local and provincial leadership positions.

43 percent of the members would prefer Pronk as party chairperson, 30 percent would choose Lilianne Ploumen. None of the remaining five candidates received more than 8 percent of the votes. Just under 70 percent of the respondents expect that Pronk will be elected chairman.

PvdA members were divided on whether the new chairman should be permitted to openly criticise the PvdA faction in Parliament. 40 percent have no objection to the party chairman publicly disagreeing with the parliamentary faction, while 30 percent think this should not be permitted.

The PvdA members have until Sunday to cast their votes. The new party chairperson will be announced on 25 September.
