AMSTERDAM – Academic, columnist and Labour PvdA ideologist Bart Tromp (62) died suddenly on Wednesday. Tromp was the Labour party's in-house critic. In 2001 he made an unsuccessful bid for party leadership of the PvdA.

Tromp was a sociologist and political scientist and taught at the universities of Leiden and Amsterdam. He was a columnist for Elsevier and Het Parool.

Former minister Klaas de Vries praised the good common sense with which Tromp criticised his party. PvdA chairman Koole called Tromp a free spirit.
