AMSTERDAM – The purchasing power of households will increase by an average of 1.75 percent this year. That is half of a percentage point more than had been previously forecast.

This emerged on Tuesday from new economic prognoses from the Bureau for Economic Policy Analysis (CPB). Pressure on the labour market will increase.

Employment opportunities will continue to rise "substantially" faster than labour supply until 2008, the CPB said. Unemployment will decrease as a result. On average unemployment will probably come to 4 percent of the working population next year.

"The number of job openings has reached a record high," the CPB pointed out.
