Public service broadcaster hits back on internet issue
The head of the Dutch Broadcasting Foundation NOS has hit back at a government party MP who says Dutch public service broadcasters should stop their internet activities, which include their flagship websites.
Jan de Jong from the NOS says: “We don’t pretend to be able to make newspapers on the internet. It's just a supplement to our television and radio programmes. If we interview Louis van Gaal, it’s three minutes on the television news but, on the website, you can see the whole 15-minute interview.”
On Monday, Anouchka van Miltenburg from the governing conservative VVD party said it looked unfair that public service broadcasters were using public money to compete with newspaper websites which have to be commercially viable.
Mr De Jong argues that there is no competition between public service broadcasters and newspapers. He says he actually wants to work together with Dutch newspaper organisations.
