Protest against Dutch dredger
A dredger becomes the centre of a dispute in Australia.29 January 2008
MELBOURNE – A dredging ship from Dutch company Boskalis has become the centre of a dispute between the government and environmental movement in Australia. The Queen of the Netherlands arrived in Melbourne this week and was greeted by dozens of small boats carrying protestors.
The dredger has been commissioned to deepen the waterway to Melbourne so that larger ships can enter the port. But environmental activists fear irreparable damage to the area.
The Australian police have cordoned off an area of 1.5 square km where the protest boats are not allowed to enter. They hope the measure will keep activists out of the area.
