GRONINGEN – The city of Groningen and environs has been faced with problems with the water supply since Sunday night. Water pressure has dropped, causing difficulty in getting any water from taps, the Groningen water company reported.

The cause of the problem is a leak in the water pipeline that occurred at about midnight last night. About 220,000 households have been without water since.

The leak was found at about 8.30 am on Monday. It is located in the south-eastern part of the city at the Euvelgunne industrial park. A spokesperson for the crisis service could not say what caused the leak.

It is not known when water will be restored. Any water from the tap must be boiled before drinking since tests as to the water's purity will not yield results for another 20 hours.

The areas of Eelde, Eelderwolde, Paterswolde, Zuidwolde and Haren have also been affected. Since ground water may have seeped into the pipes, the water company is advising residents in these areas as well to boil any water that does come out of the tap for 2 minutes before using.
