RIJSWIJK – The Dutch railways (NS) faced problems with its automatic ticket machines throughout the country again today. Travellers were unable to use their PIN pass to pay for tickets from the machines. A spokesperson reported this earlier today. On Monday the system was out of use for 90 minutes as well.

The spokesperson says that about 70 percent of machines were not working because of a network problem. Travellers who were unable to pay for a ticket otherwise were not fined by conductors but given a chance to pay later.

The machines are working now, but NS is holding an emergency meeting with KPN, which operates the network for the PIN automatic payment system.

NS does not want a repeat of this kind of problem during the rush hour.
