Prison inmates to be promoted or degraded

Prison inmates who refuse to cooperate will get the toughest regime possible, Deputy Justice Foreign Minister Fred Teeven says in an interview with newspaper de Volkskrant.

Under the new rules, which are to come into force at the end of the year, inmates will be promoted or degraded depending on their behaviour.

Good behaviour will earn them additional freedom of movement or extra training.

Those, however, who are jailed for a fourth or fifth time will automatically be placed under the toughest regime.

Inmates who attack prison staff will have their leaves suspended.

Inmates will be promoted, the conservative minister says, if they are willing to follow a course or work well, and those who behave themselves will get more freedoms.
