HEESCH – At least 15 children at primary school de Toermalijn in Heesch (Noord-Brabant) fell ill at about noon today while attending a performance by another class.

Some of the children fainted, others had difficulty breathing, suffered nausea, vomiting or headache. Eight children were taken to hospital. What brought on the outbreak is still not known.

The school was immediately evacuated. Those who had fallen ill were taken care of on stretchers and blankets on the school playground.

The police report that the children fell ill because of a lack of oxygen. It was mainly older students who were affected. Why this happened however remains a mystery. The fire brigade carried out a number of measurements in classrooms this afternoon.

Students and parents were gathered in a nearby sports hall to be updated on the situation. They were sent home and informed that the school would be closed on Friday as well.
