Premier League: Ajax widen gap on Feyenoord

VVV-Venlo have beaten Roda JC 2-0, handing them the dubious of honour of being bottom-of-the-league. VVV took the lead in the latter stages of the first half, when Bary Maguire converted a penalty granted for a foul by goalkeeper Pawel Kieszek, who was shown red.

In the second half, Mads Junker failed to get Roda back into the game when he missed an opportunity to convert a penalty. Bryan Linssen grabbed VVV’s second winner in the final minutes of the second half. After 16 matches, VVV now have 10 points and Excelsior 8.

Ajax were in mediocre form but nonetheless secured a 1-0 away victory over RKC Waalwijk thanks to an own goal by Guy Ramos just before half-time. The last 25 minutes RKC Waalwijk were playing with just ten men because Sigourney Bandjar had earned a red card for downing Davy Klaassen in the box after he had broken free.

Ajax striker Miralem Sulejmani, however, managed to fail to convert the penalty. The victory allowed Ajax, who are now in fourth position, to widen the gap on fourth-placed Feyenoord to two points. With the same amount of points as Feyenoord but with four goals less, sc Heerenveen are in fifth spot.

In an entertaining fixture FC Utrecht drew 2-2 against Feyenoord. Daan Bovenberg and Edouard Duplan scored for the home side, with John Guidetti and substitute Jerson Cabral netting the goals for the Rotterdam squad. FC Utrecht’s Dave Bulthuis was sent off in the last minute when he was shown his second yellow card. Under their new coach, Jan Wouters, FC Utrecht have so far succeeded in winning just one out of seven Premier League duels.

Vitesse failed to mark their 900th Premier League fixture with a home victory, drawing, instead, 0-0 against FC Groningen. To make matters worse, the home side played the last 15 minutes or so with one man less after substitute Nicky Hofs was shown his second yellow card just 13 minutes after he entered the pitch. Victory would have put Vitesse level with sixth-placed Feyenoord on 28 points. cl
