AMSTERDAM — Population growth in the Netherlands is at a 100-year low due to increasing emigration combined with low immigration and a low birth rate.

Statistics Netherlands (CBS) published a report on Friday showing 121,000 emigrated from the Netherlands in 2005. This was 11,000 higher than the year before.

The CBS said there were more emigrants than immigrants in 2005, and the a continuing low birth rate. "With only 30,000, the population increase in the Netherlands in 2005 was the lowest since 1900. On 1 January 2006," the CBS said. The population stood at 16.34 million.

"More and more people leave the Netherlands to settle abroad; the number of emigrants for 2005 and 2004 totalled 121,000 and 110,000 respectively. The increase is mainly caused by the fact that more native Dutch left the country. They accounted for almost half of all emigrants. A significant part of them settled in Belgium, Germany, the UK and the Netherlands Antilles," the CBS said.

The number of immigrants entering the Netherlands totalled 94,000 in 2005, roughly equal to the figure in the year before.

There was a sharp decrease in the number of Moroccan and Turkish immigrants. "On balance, a few hundred Turks and Moroccans came to settle in the Netherlands in 2005," the report said.

The number of Polish immigrants, on the other hand, rose from 2,000 to 7,000. They were the second largest group after repatriating Dutch.

The CBS said for the second consecutive year more people left (121,000) than entered (94,000) the country, resulting in a negative net migration of 27,000. In 2000 immigrants still outnumbered emigrants by 54,000.

The birth rate in the Netherlands began a downward trend in 2000 and is expected to continue in the years to come due to a decrease of young women in the Dutch population. A total of 188,000 babies were born in 2005, 6,000 fewer than in the previous year.

Last year, 137,000 people died in the Netherlands, roughly the same amount as in 2004, the CBS said.
