Poll: broad support for Libya operation
An opinion poll has shown that a 55 percent majority of the Dutch population is in favour of joining the international coalition action against Libya.
The poll by confirms that the enforcement of Thursday's Security Council resolution is widely supported in the Netherlands; only 6 percent of people polled are against any form of interntional intervention in Libya.
A generous three quarters of the respondents 77 percent thinks that the UN should have acted sooner. The researchers interviewed 2500 Dutch citizens on Friday and Saturday.
The outcome is a boost for Prime Minister Mark Rutte's centre-right government, which has offered military assistance to the operation, dubbed Odyssey Dawn by the US. Mr Rutte has indicated that any Dutch participation would likely be within a NATO framework. The Netherlands could offer F16 fighter jets, or Navy assistance involving the frigate HNLMS Tromp off the Libyan coast, as well as submarines.http://cdn.radionetherlands.nl/data/files/images/lead/800px-F801_Tromp_ca_1995.jpg
