AMSTERDAM - Amsterdam's police force will for the first time join the annual Gay Pride boat parade.

On Saturday, 2 August, police officers of the "Pink in Blue" network will lead the parade in uniform, in what they describe as a "dignified boat".

Most other participants in the Gay Pride parade usually wear scant or provocative clothing.

Amsterdam's police say their participation is intended to promote social tolerance. The decision to join the colourful event follows after much internal discussion.
