AMSTERDAM – A prisoner escaped from the penitentiary in Zoetermeer on Tuesday morning and fled into a residential area.

The police have started a search on the ground and by helicopter, a spokesperson reports.

The man took off while being transported to hospital after he told prison officers that his foot was bothering him. The public prosecution department in The Hague says the prisoner is a 25-year-old man but has not disclosed what crime he was in prison for.

The police believe that the man was headed towards the Aïdaschouw street, RTV West reports. Police are advising residents in the area to keep windows and doors shut. The new broadcast reported that the fugitive was seen by a resident at about 10.30 am.
