The national ombudsman said the use of repeat offenders' photographs went 'too far.'

The Hague – Police in the Ijselland region have been reprimanded for their use of pictures of repeat offenders.

The police corps, which operates in the eastern region including the cities of Zwolle, Kampen and Deventer, sent shopkeepers a monthly brochure with portraits of the ten most active shoplifters. The national ombudsman, Alex Brenninkmeijer, said this use of photographs went "too far."

Following complaints to the ombudsman, an investigation confirmed that the same pictures were also reproduced on placemats and birthday calendars privately used by policemen.

The Ombudsman also criticised the police's internal use of the term "recidivist of the week." Brenninkmeijer recommended the Ijsseland force sharpen its rules on privacy protection.
