MONCHIQUE – The Portuguese police on Thursday searched an animal crematorium located 50 km from the town where British child Madeleine McCann disappeared in May. Evert Hendrik Hoos, the Dutch owner of the animal crematorium Creon Starlight, has reported this.

"The officers asked me three times if I'd spoken to the girl's parents or knew them," said Hoos, from the southern town of Monchique. The crematorium owner says he has never met the couple.

Two officers in civilian dress searched the crematorium for a half hour, also looking inside the oven. The police did not say whether they were looking for Madeleine. The girl went missing in Praia da Luz on 3 May.

Evert Hendrik Hoos left the Netherlands some years ago after serving time in connection with a series of arson offences and attacks committed by a collection agency he headed in The Hague during the 1980s.
