AMSTERDAM – The police in Utrecht have responded positively to a citizens' initiative to set up a neighbourhood watch in the Ondiep neighbourhood. They are applauding the plan. "We always encourage participation by citizens," a spokesperson said on Friday morning.

The residents want to set up a patrol because they feel the police are not doing enough to tackle the problems in the area. The police say they are willing to meet with residents to exchange ideas about how to cooperate.

The Utrecht municipality also responded positively on Friday to the plans. "We appreciate the commitment of the residents of Ondiep. We are glad to discuss the initiative with them. These kinds of initiatives fit in well with our programme to improve safety in the city: 'A safe Utrecht! Doing it together'."
