Dutch police arrested a homeless man who refused to go to a reception centre to avoid the cold weather.

THE HAGUE – Police in the southeast of the Netherlands said Tuesday they had arrested overnight a homeless man who refused to go to a reception centre to stop him from freezing to death.

"He refused to go a centre so the emergency services called us," a spokeswoman for police at Venray in northern Limburg province said.

"He was arrested and put in a cell. That way he at least passed the night being warmer than if he had stayed outside."

Dutch law allows "police to arrest people for their own safety," she said.

"It was for his own safety that he was taken in and housed, in this case it was in a cell."

The temperature fell to below minus 18 degrees Celsius Monday night in the area and forecasters said it would be as cold again Tuesday night.
