AMSTERDAM — Home Affairs Minister Johan Remkes is a hardnosed politician but he emerged with a bruised ego on Thursday as Amsterdam Major Job Cohen, the city's police chief and his officers verbally laid into him for his "zig-zag " policies.

When appointed, Liberal VVD tough-man Remkes vowed to put more police on the beat and to tackle fears of rising crime head on.

He raised the ire of Amsterdam police chief Jelle Kuiper by his claims that the police force in the capital was frustrating his attempts to modernise the nation's police.
