AMSTERDAM — An explosive device was detonated in the Utrecht city centre on Friday morning.
The windows of houses in the vicinity of the blast in the Kerkstraat were shattered, but no injuries were reported.
Police are investigating whether the explosive device was a nail bomb.
Inquiries are also being conducted to determine what caused the blast and witnesses are being questioned.
The explosion took place at about 5.30am in a bike path alongside a residence.
The police are not yet certain what the exact circumstances were.
"It appears perhaps intentional, but we are going to investigate that," a police spokesperson said.
Residents said the explosion was an "enormous bang".
