AMSTERDAM — Police launched a neighbourhood search in Alphen aan den Rijn on Wednesday morning after the body of toddler was found in the boot of a car earlier this week.

A woman and a man were arrested in Holten on Monday night after police found the girl's body. Police suspicions were raised when the vehicle was seen on a road where no traffic is allowed at night.

The identity of the girl has not yet been determined and an autopsy was being conducted on Wednesday afternoon to discover the cause of death. The victim's relationship with the man and woman is not yet known.

Police suspect foul play and have launched the neighbourhood search in Alphen aan den Rijn because the female suspect lives in the southern Dutch city. The man has no fixed address.

The suspects have been remanded in custody and are due to appear before a judge in The Hague on Friday. Police have assigned 20 officers to the case.
