AMSTERDAM – Amsterdam-Amstelland police have arrested eight people, disabling an international cocaine-smuggling ring.
The suspects, ranging in age from 18 to 61, were suspected of involvement in the smuggling of drugs to Switzerland, police said on Thursday.
The case came to light when two Amsterdam residents were arrested at Zurich airport on New Year’s Eve. They were wearing special shoes in which they were transporting hundreds of grammes of cocaine.
The gang later turned out also to be using specially modified underwear to conceal drugs.
Since then, police have arrested six other suspects, after receiving tips from the parents of the men arrested in Zurich.
Police found the shoes and underwear, large amounts of cocaine, various firearms and more than EUR 100,000 in cash during house searches in Amsterdam, Purmerend and Almere.
All eight suspects remain in jail.
