A task force will be assembled to address the upward trend, according to police representatives.

The Hague – The number of robberies in homes and petrol stations is on the rise, according to the Dutch council of police superintendents.

The police organisation reported that the number of armed robberies increased 11 percent in 2008, and 23 percent so far in 2009.

There were approximately 2,300 robberies reported in 2008.

The perpetrators appear to focus on elderly victims, according to the council. Police were unable to explain the reasons behind this trend

A broad-based taskforce of police, justice officials and companies will be set up soon to decide on an approach to combat this problem.

“We're expecting this will lead to measures with a positive impact,” a police spokesperson told ANP.
