AMSTERDAM — Immigrants who commit crimes should sometimes receive harsher sentences than Dutch criminals because different morals and standards require different penalties, a police chief in The Hague has said.

Speaking to newspaper Haagsche Courant, police commissioner Jan Wiarda said the law treated everyone equally, but that the treatment of immigrants required a different approach than that used with native Dutch.
