AMSTERDAM — Five people were arrested on Wednesday night as police and tax officials raided an illegal bingo session in Achter-Drempt in the Eastern Netherlands.

A police spokesperson said a large sum of money and two expensive cars were seized. Some 250 people were playing bingo when the police arrived.

According to the law governing games of chance the maximum prize money for such events cannot be higher than EUR 1,400 and the main prize cannot exceed EUR 350.

Preliminary investigations suggested the prizes at the bingo session were much higher, the spokesperson said.

Achter-Drempt is in the Achterhoek region in the east part of Gelderland. The region lies between the IJssel, Oude IJssel, German border and the province Overijssel.
