LEEUWARDEN - The police in the northern Dutch city of Leeuwarden arrested three men suspected of involvement in a European people trafficking network, a Dutch police spokesman told reporters Monday.

The three are a 40-year old man, his 19-year old son and a 47-year old man, all from the city of Leeuwarden where six months ago the Dutch police discovered four Kurds heading to other European countries.

Some 72 others were arrested in other European countries Monday on suspicion of involvement in the smuggling of Iraqi Kurds to Scandinavia and Britain.

According to the Dutch public prosecutor, the Netherlands served only as a transit country.

The European arrests were coordinated by Europol. In France, some 27 people were arrested including the group's leader.
