HAARLEM – This weekend police arrested the mother of Leonardo, a 9-year-old Chinese boy who had been left behind on a Leiden-Amsterdam train on 5 February.
The child's mother voluntarily came back to the Netherlands from Italy, a police spokesperson reported Monday.
Kennemerland police phoned the woman, who turned out to be Italy. She said that she was willing to return to the Netherlands.
She was arrested for leaving her child in a helpless situation, a punishable offence. The police also want to know what exactly happened on the day she left the child on the train.
Once the police investigation has been completed, the public prosecutor will decide whether to prosecute the woman. The young boy has been placed with a foster family.
The Child Protection Authority will decide on the further care of the child, the police spokesperson said.
