AMSTERDAM — Residents of Tolbert have expressed disbelief as the small Dutch town in the north of the country has become the scene of the sixth fatal 'relationship' tragedy in the Netherlands this year.

Police discovered the bodies of a boy, aged 2 and his sister, aged 4, in a home in Tolbert on Monday. Their mother, who was slightly injured, had earlier fled the building and begged neighbours to raise the alarm.

A 46-year-old Dutch-Israeli man was arrested for allegedly inflicting the fatal injuries on the children. The suspect was injured when he resisted arrest, the police said. Both he and the 33-year-old woman were taken to hospital for treatment.

A police spokesperson confirmed that officers had been called to the home on previous occasions to mediate in disputes between the couple.

The man has been variously described as the mother's boyfriend or former boyfriend.

This is the sixth time this year people have died during a dispute within a family or relationship.

In April, a man admitted killing his wife and two children in Zoetermeer. He had initially claimed the three had disappeared. Another "family drama" in the same month claimed the lives of five people in Hilversum. Police believe a man killed his wife and three children before committing suicide.

Several tragedies occurred at the beginning of the year. An 18-year-old woman was stabbed to death by her 21-year-old brother. He has admitted killing her.

In another incident in January, a 55-year-old man was stabbed to death in The Hague. Police suspect the man's 30-year-old son of committing the crime during a family argument. The suspect's brother, 22, was seriously injured in the incident and their mother, 48, suffered lesser injuries.

Two children, aged 3 and 6, were found dead in their family home on the Kikkersloot in Zoetermeer, also in January. Their 38-year-old mother had killed herself hours earlier by throwing herself in front of the train.

It is suspected she suffered from psychiatric problems and murdered the children before taking her own life.
