AMSTERDAM – The Amsterdam police announced on Friday that they arrested a 40-year-old man who was pretending to be a police officer last night.

Late on Thursday night the man stepped in to assist police who were having trouble breaking up a fight. He claimed to be an officer in plainclothes and helped his "colleagues" handcuff a man.

He then went on to roughly push a number of bystanders out of the way.

After the fight was subdued the man disappeared. He turned up a little while later at another fight, once again offering assistance.

This time he claimed to be a detective. When it became clear that the man was lying, he was himself arrested for assault and depriving another of his liberty.
