THE HAGUE - Lilianne Ploumen will be the new Labour PvdA party chairperson. The members gave her more votes than former minister Jan Pronk, the expected winner. The results were delayed by several hours on Monday evening.

Since no single candidate received an absolute majority in the first round of voting, the second choice listed by members also was counted into the votes. Six "rounds of counting" were necessary to identify a winner. Very few votes separated Ploumen from Pronk. Party leader Wouter Bos says Ploumen does not differ significantly from Jan Pronk on ideological grounds.

Ploumen (45) is director of the aid organisation Cordaid. Until 2003 she was member of green-left party GroenLinks. As chairperson she wants to increase the influence of the members.
