SCHEVENINGEN  - Herring aficionados need not worry: there will be more than enough "Hollandse nieuwe" on vlaggetjes day. The new herring season will open this year on 9 June with the traditional "vlaggetjes" festivities in Scheveningen.

Some 250,000 visitors are expected to attend the event. The organisers reported on Wednesday that Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende would be ushering in the season by hoisting the flag in Scheveningen.

There was a shortage of new herring at the event last year. "Contractual obligations prevented us from postponing the opening of the season. So we had to do without the new herring, and what kind of a vlaggetjes day is that!" said Arie Kleijn, director of the festivities.
